Blogger Meet-Up

A couple of weeks ago, Liz, Jill and I went to the BYU-blogger meet up at Orem's best-kept-secret, The Chocolate. (seriously, just the NAME of this place had me drooling). It was so much fun seeing all the owners of these blogs I follow! Plus winning 8 free yoga classes during the giveaway didn't hurt at all :) It's a little creepy when I know what someone did last weekend because of their blog and yet, they don't know me from Adam... but that's what you get for posting stuff on the internet!
I came away with tons of ideas and huge amount of appreciation for people in general. Collective consciousness is truly a remarkable thing: it's incredible how much strength can be found simply through sharing life experiences. It was amazing to be right in the midst of really creative people and to watch ideas unfold and take physical shape. Well, at least I found it amazing cuz I'm the least creative person I know haha.

I had such a fun time! and I'm pretty sure I walked away with an obsession for colored skinny jeans... SO MANY OUTFIT IDEAS.

Can't wait for next time!

we're funny fellows

Kyle and I were quite hilarious this week if I say so myself. Probably from being sleep-deprived, but no matter! Here's some excellent quotes that resulted from this:

"Honey, I really want to watch DNA replication videos..."-  very drowsy, sleepy and loopy husband.

"And then Lehi had to send Nephi back to get the plates in Jerusalem..." - sleep-talking Jessica

"you gave her WHAT? a contraceptive?!" - Kyle (I had said "dress"...)

"'validify'. It's a word now. I just made it up!" - Jess

"you know hun? I hope you know that I only stop kissing you so I can re-fill on air"... -Kyle

"Uhhh Kyle? I think there's a rat in the duct system!" - Jess
"Well, I have to go... at least you can't say I left you without company!" - Kyle

"I just wasn't a good bleeder today". - Kyle in reference to his blood typing lab.

So basically, we are the funniest people we know. Actually, I just crack myself up on a daily basis... how lame. haha

This weekend has been very relaxing and productive. I got to catch up with a great friend at Starbucks this morning after I cleaned the bathroom, went to the gym and did laundry. Plus my favorite gym ladies were there all matchy-matchy. AGAIN. Seriously people, it's like these girls get all dolled up just to go to the gym. When I walk in on Saturday mornings, I've got last night's make-up half smeared on my face, bangs sticking straight up because I slept weird and I'm stumbling over my feet because my eyes are trying to snap themselves shut again. It's women like these women who never seem to sweat so they look totally awesome post-exercise compared to girls like me who look like they just got drenched by a torrential down-pour of rain.

Whatever.
And I find myself eating chocolate again as I type this... this is getting ridiculous.

I hope you guys are having a fabulous weekend!

some marriage advice from someone totally unqualified to give it.

I think society has taught us to search for equality in everything. Equality in roles, equality in job opportunities, education etc. Theoretically then, in marriage, if both you and your spouse are equally giving 50%, it should come out to a 100% of a "fulfilling" relationship.

Well, we haven't found this to be true.

If marriage is supposed to be an equation where 1+1 = more than 2 (and we believe it is)... then the 50/50 rule doesn't work. If you're going by that, then it becomes 10x easier to find fault with your spouse. You think, "well shoot, I've done x, y and z... where's your 50%?" Little do you know what they actually have done. Or what they're defining 50% to be. It requires both of you to devote 100% into the relationship. The ironic thing is... if you think you're giving it 100% effort... you're probably not. 100% effort requires more than just thinking about how much you've given; it's about focusing on them and their efforts.

Anyway, just some tidbits of knowledge we've gathered in the oh, 2 months and 25 days we've been married.

Have a Happy Thursday!

Dear Boys....

I recently got "tagged" to do this Dear Boys... post. Basically a short synopsis of all the guys that I've liked and why it didn't work out. Well, after reading a couple of other people's posts on the same subject, I got totally jazzed to do my own, until I started trying to figure out exactly HOW many boys I'd be writing about.
Too many my friends.
I guess that's what happens when you have always liked boys.
Anyway, here goes nothing!

Dear Co-op Sandbox painter,
You're favorite color was green, so I changed mine to green too. We used to "paint" the sandbox with water at recess and it took us the whole year to figure out why the "paint" didn't stick. We were 5. It just wouldn't have worked out.
Love,
my ADHD self.

Dear Gap-Tooth,
I don't know if you meant to do this or not, but remember that one time you "pretended" to kiss my hand while we were waiting in line for lunch? Yeah, you TOTALLY kissed me hand. So thanks for stealing that title in my life.
ps: I hope you got braces eventually.
Love,
The Offended

Dear Suicidal,
You know, writing this has made me realize how quickly things can change. Being 7 years old and in second grade, I guess we didn't think of suicide as anything that could affect us. It's crazy to think you're not here anymore. Not that we had any contact really in later years, but I hope your family is doing well.
Love,
The Saddened

Dear Pothead,
I'm sorry that I used you to realized the full-potential of my feminine powers. To be honest, I don't think I had much "power" seeings how I was 8. I hope you're having fun flying "higher than a kite"... if you know what I mean...
Love,
The Practiced

Dear Stabber,
The first week of 4th grade was made a lot better by the fact that you were constantly trying to stab me with the compass we had to get as part of our school supplies. I quite enjoyed being stabbed. Really, I did. Actually, I just liked stabbing you back when you weren't expecting it.
Love,
The-Back-Stabber

Dear Ballers,
Yes there were two of you. I couldn't quite figure out which one I liked more... so I kept both of you around. One of you I played soccer with at recess on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and the other I played wallball with on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Or I'd switch it up depending on who I liked more that week.
Love,
The Player

Dear NBA Wanna-be,
I hope you improved your reading and writing abilities. And math. And science. I really wasn't as smart as you thought I was... I just pretended to be smarter so you'd talk to me. Even though I ended up doing your homework more often than not.
Love,
The Nerd

Dear Producer,
....
....
I was 15. Give me a break.
Love,
Twitterpatted

Dear Jersey Shore extra,
I hope you're gtl'ing it up (gym, tan, laundry...). Also, you were just mean. Also, you're still mean.
Love,
Not-your-average-Snooki

Dear Enzo,
Only you will get that nickname. I do hope you're doing well. You taught me a lot about relationships, love and sacrifice. I hope you find what you're looking for, whatever that is.
ps: I still don't like Eminem
Love,
The Waiter

Dear 1 of 4,
You know, looking back on things, it probably would've been better if we remained friends. I hope you get yo'self on a mission soon!!
Love,
Another 1 of 4

Dear Track Star,
It took me a good couple of months to admit to myself that I liked you. And I still didn't tell you haha. You're such a great guy and I hope you're having fun being half-way across the world!
Love,
The Silenced

Dear Hubby,
I'm so glad I found you.  It took me a few tries, a couple of duds, a few heartbreaks and tears, but all of that was so worth it knowing that I have you forever. As we "celebrate" our first year of dating tonight, just know that I love you beyond anything I thought possible.
Love,
Your lawfully, wedded wife :)

that to do list? never got to-done...

Due equal parts to nature and nurture, I've always been a list maker.  Everything seems a little less chaotic when you've got a blueprint of your day staring at you. Lately I've been using Microsoft's OneNote program for school, and its got this SWEET program that lets you create "tags", with different symbols indicating different tasks.  The ctrl+1 tag is a check-box signifying "to-do" items; this little button has been my best friend this semester.

Today's to-do list included:
go to the Temple
run 5 miles
dishes
laundry
vacuuming
sweeping/moping
clean bathroom
dusting
clean mirror
clean bedroom
wash sheets
get portfolio's done for Social Theory
Women's Studies current events paper done
study for a religion test
make stir-fry
read for Social Theory
take quiz for Social Theory
friend's reception tonight (one of four this month I'll have you know...)
finish up Stats homework

This is what actually got done today:
Eat a bag of chocolate chips
But I did run my 5 miles so I can... right?
get locked out of my house
break in by breaking off the back door's doorknob
spill the husband's prized pomegranate lemonade juice all over the kitchen floor
Facebook
Pinterest
blog

We're leaving for the reception in oh... 30 minutes and most of my to-do list isn't done.
Not sure why I bother creating them really... Maybe they serve as a reminder of just how much I really procrastinate more than a reminder of what needs to get done!

Have a great weekend! I'll be here... procrastinating... and searching for more chocolate.

eat your heart out

Allow me to toot my own horn for a second: I'm not too bad of a chef.
Somehow in my teenage years I snuck my way out of having to do hardly any cooking for the family.  This could be due to the inordinate amount of time I was away at work, volleyball, friends' houses, school and church meetings.

Anyway, I got this notion in my head that I would never ever have to cook because food would always just materialize in front of me. I mean really, where did all this food in the fridge/pantry come from anyways? Well, going off to college served as a rude awakening to my absence of cooking knowledge. I had Top Ramen, popcorn, and rice/tomato sauce/sausage down to an art but that's because I got frustrated enough to just do it. I learned that you actually had to buy food. And to make sure to kept track of expiration dates. (This one time, I forgot I had bought a cantaloupe and put it in my fruit bowl. It rotted and got mold all over my roommates oranges.... that were in another bowl. That's right; my cantaloupe was so moldy that it went through not one, but two bowl sides to the oranges next to it. I had a big learning curve to get over ok?)  I experimented with some recipes, but mostly stole them all from my bomb roommates who had basically been cooking since they were in the cradle. I'd like to say that I graduated freshman year with a greater appreciation for all things healthy food, recipes and expiration dates.
Married life has given me yet another awakening (a little less rude than the first time thankfully.) For the first time ever I'm doing this thing called meal-planning. Seriously.
Which leads me to this puppy right here:
le crockpot.
I've had this little contraption for a year and a half now and today, I finally cracked it out!
This is a big moment for me people. Crock pots have terrified me. I feel like they epitomize everything "womanly" and "domestic" and now that I've used it... I'm pretty much labeled as domestic too. Which is fine I guess; it's just not a label I thought I'd ever have.
I usually try to plan about 6-7 meals every two weeks for Kyle and I. Most of the cookbooks I have use recipes that make 4-8 servings, so with one recipe we get two meals. Plus we like love eating out so we really are quite well-fed even though we only plan 6 meals.
Kyle's family grew up doing crock pot meals and when he suggested that we do one for this Sunday, I was slightly anxious for reasons I still don't know.
Long story short, he picked out a crock pot recipe from the ever-traditional Good Book cookbook (the red and white checkered one) and while he was away home-teaching, I made the dang thing!
I haven't had any of it yet, but it's making our house smells AMAZING.

After the crock pot challenge was conquered I felt licensed to continue my domesticity by making no-bake cookies. Actually, I just really wanted something sweet and these are the easiest cookies to make. And the husband loves them too. I believe that's a win-win situation.

Anyway, I hope you guys all had a great weekend! We did almost nothing yesterday and it was awesome.

I'm including the recipes for both the crock pot meal and the no-bakes. While I can't vouch for the crock pot meal yet, the no-bakes I can; and yes, they're to die for. Thank you Food Network.

Beef Pot Roast:
1 2.5-3lb boneless beef chuck pot roast (I used a rump roast... it was cheaper)
2 T cooking oil
1 t Worcestershire sauce
1 t instant beef bouillon
1 t dried basil, crushed
1/2 t salt (which I just realized I never added...)
4 medium potatoes (cut into bite sized pieces)
6 medium parsnips (peeled and cut into 2" pieces)
2 small onions (cut into wedges. I actually used half of one yellow onion and cut that into wedges)
2 stalks celery (bias-sliced (whatever that is!) into 1" pieces. And I definitely added more celery)

Trim fat from meat. Put the sliced vegetables in the cooker. Cut meat to fit, if necessary. Add 3/4 c. of water, Worcestershire sauce, bouillon, basil and salt. Cook on low for 9-11 hrs, or high for 4.5-5.5 hrs.

No-bakes from the Heavens (I made that up, but I think it's fitting)
2 c. sugar
4 T cocoa
1 stick butter
1/2 c. milk
1 cup peanut butter
1 T vanilla
3 c. oatmeal
Waxed paper

In a heavy saucepan bring to a boil, the sugar, cocoa, butter and milk. Let boil for 1 minute then add peanut butter, vanilla and oatmeal. On a sheet of waxed paper, drop mixture by the teaspoonfuls, until cooled and hardened.

lazy afternoon....

I miss my husband.
He's currently taking a physics test (at 9pm I'll have you know) and I've been at home since 2:30 doing absolutely nothing, just waiting for him to get here.
bleh.
I should clarify, by "doing absolutely nothing" I mean, wallowing in my non-creativeness. Pinterest will do that to you I believe.
On the plus side, I finally put up my collage of black and white prints above my new desk! I've had to be SO patient gathering all those photos and frames. It's been a 19 year and 10 month project people.
Actually, more like 2 weeks, but I still had to be unbearably patient.
And since I know how you all are just as excited about this as I am, here is the photog evidence:

Also, if anyone is a master template designer... could you help me out? I want to re-do/add some things but I'm not exactly blogger-literate. Shanks :)

Happy Wednesday!
